The city of Spearfish is causing many degradation problems of Spearfish Creek by mowing the grass and cutting back the trees right to the edge of the creek, thus causing erosion and depleting the riparian habitat of trout. With erosion the fish can not spawn normally, they need gravel to spawn upon, and the mud caused by erosion builds up algae and possibly deadly didymo. The solution is simple, leave 2-3 feet of foliage along the edge of the creek. The city does not own the creek, but is the jurisdiction of South Dakota Game and Fish, your creek.
