Ruth Cooper was born Sept. 22, 1926, on a farm between Goodwin and Strandburg, S.D., to Wayne and Nettie (Bjerke) Smothers. She passed away peacefully on Nov. 16, 2020, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare in Spearfish. She was 94 years old.
Ruth attended grade school in Strandburg and continued her education in Watertown. She married Ronald Cooper on April 21, 1946. While living in Watertown, they became parents to three children, Cheryl, Conrad and Craig. Eventually a move was made to Casper, Wyo., and then to Spearfish in 1966, where she has since resided.
Ruth enjoyed sewing, quilting, taking care of flowers and reading. Ruth and Ron liked dancing and were members of several square dancing clubs in Watertown and Belle Fourche. After Ron retired in 1986, they spent numerous winters in Arizona. They also enjoyed going to the cottage on Lake Kampeska, staying at the cabin they built in the Black Hills and trips to Deadwood. Ron and Ruth were fortunate to have been married 67 years in April of 2013.
Ruth will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spearfish for over 50 years.
