Leonard M. Schumacher passed away on September 28, 2019, at Spearfish Canyon Assisted Living in Spearfish, SD.
Leonard was born November 19, 1923, in Ethan, SD, to Matthew and Elizabeth Schumacher. He grew up on the family farm and did commercial farming with his dad and older nephews. Leonard also did construction work, he worked in the timber, and also Homestake Mining Company. In 1966, he became the City of Lead street superintendent. Leonard retired from that position in 1985. Leonard took pride in his job and worked alongside of many people that respected him and looked up to him. He spoke often of the people of the City of Lead and how good they were to him.
Leonard moved to Sturgis, SD, after retirement and continued to live there until he entered the Garden Hills Assisted Living Center in Spearfish. After living alone for so many years, everyone was surprised to see that he adjusted so well to his new surrounding and we were all proud of him. A few months ago, he entered the Spearfish Canyon Assisted Living Center in Spearfish.
Leonard was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Eagles Club.
Leonard had a strong faith in God and love for his family. He enjoyed fishing in his younger days, along with going to the Threshing Bee in Sturgis, and taking numerous road trips. He remembered the fishing him and Grandpa would do and the lunch that Grandma used to make. Leonard had a love for animals and always had a faithful companion by his side.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Elizabeth Schumacher; his brother, Henry (Marie) Schumacher; and his older brother, Albert.
Leonard is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
Uncle Leonard had a soft spot in his heart for everyone and will be missed. Leonard never judged, he only listened. Once a Big Man with a Big Heart, now a memory for those left behind. Thank you, Uncle Leonard, for being a part of our lives.
Leonard is now fixing the streets of Heaven.
