Jan Charles (JC) Houghton, 83, Spearfish, died on Sept. 19, 2019.

JC was born in Smith Center, Kan., Aug. 12, 1936, to Sidney and Lona Houghton. He grew up in Spearfish, graduating from Spearfish HS in 1953. Enlisting in the Navy in 1954, he served 4 years aboard USS Mullaney, making three 6 month Far East tours.  On Sept. 7, 1959, Jan married Darlene (LaNette) Mahoney.

Jan earned a bachelors degree in business from South Dakota State University. A self-described ‘jack of all trades’, he was a master electrician, real estate broker, grocery store owner, remodeled homes, developed property, drove activity bus, was mayor of Hulett, Wyo., and Crook County assessor.

Jan and LaNette had five children. LaNette passed away in 1993. Aug. 5, 2000, JC married Callie J. Heinbaugh.

Preceded in death by parents; wife, LaNette; and brother, Thomas Houghton.  He is  survived by wife, Callie; children, Kelly Waugh (Scott), Brian Houghton, Christina Marta (Shawn), Joshua Houghton, and Jedidiah Houghton (Julie); 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia Wallace (Jim); brother, Donald Houghton; Callie’s five children and her seven grandchildren.

Graveside services will  be at 2:30 PM on October 11, at Black Hills National Cemetery.
