STURGIS — Sturgis earned a three-games-to-zero victory over Hot Springs in the Scoopers’ home volleyball opener Thursday evening at the west gym in Sturgis. Scores were 25-13, 25-13, and 25-14.
“Our passing was more accurate, and that made it much easier to set up our offense,” said Sturgis head coach Traci Fransen, whose team had lost to Belle Fourche on Tuesday. “Our serving was more consistent, and we limited our errors.”
Sarah Janz served an ace to put Sturgis ahead 4-1 in the first game.
The Scoopers gained side out and stayed ahead 8-4. Kayley Whatley’s attacking kill and Kylie Shaw’s serving ace highlighted a four-point run that extended Sturgis’ advantage to 12-4.
Sturgis’ lead grew to nine points, at 15-6, when Savannah Jones served an ace. Whatley recorded another attacking kill to put the Scoopers ahead 20-10.
Hot Springs closed the margin to 21-13 on Jaylen Nachtigall’s serving ace. Sturgis scored the next four points to win the game 25-13.
Janz’s block enabled the Scoopers to take a 10-4 lead in the second game. Hot Springs stayed with 11-6, but a Janz attacking kill gave Sturgis side out and a 12-6 advantage.
Jones recorded a serving ace as the Scoopers pushed their lead to 15-7. With the score 20-12, Ella Johnson served back-to-back aces for a 22-12 advantage en route to the 25-13 win.
Hot Springs led 3-1 in the third game before Sturgis gained side out. Janz served two aces to highlight a four-point run that propelled the Scoopers to a 5-3 edge.
Kylee Wolter served an ace to make the score Sturgis 8, Hot Springs 4. Hot Springs gained side out and used two Jaida Kramer serving aces to slice the margin to 8-7.
The Scoopers gained side out to begin a five-point run. Whatley (attacking kill) and Jones (serving ace) helped Sturgis open a 13-7 advantage.
Sturgis led 17-13 after gaining side out. Janz’s attacking kill, Jones’ attacking kill, and Whatley’s serving ace helped the Scoopers build a 23-13 cushion en route to the 25-14 win.
