Sturgis Titans open season with 7-2 win over Newcastle

STURGIS — The Sturgis Titans Post 33 baseball team defeated the Newcastle Dogies 7-2 in the season opener Thursday at Strong Field. 

David Anderson, Josh West, Zack Hess, Dylan Gillespie, Tristan Walters, Colton Cruickshank, and Ridge Inhofer all scored runs for Post 33. 

The Titans started off scoring two runs in the first, second, and fourth inning and one in the third to lead 7-0. 

Newcastle’s score came from two walk-in runs in the fifth inning from Dayton Williams and Zach Purvance.    

Gage Murphy was the starting pitcher for the Titans, and faced 13 batters, throwing 55 pitches, allowing three walks, one hit, no runs, and he recorded six strikeouts. 

Devon Odle came in and threw 29 pitches in the third and fourth inning. 

Anderson pitched in the fifth, and Walters finished the game with seven straight strikeouts, throwing 30 pitches and facing seven batters.

For the Titans, West was three of four at the plate, scoring a run, and he had one RBI. Ridge Inhofer was four of five at the plate, scoring a run and one RBI.  

The Titans left seven runners on base.  

The Titans travel to Mitchell on Sunday for two games and then back home to face Rapid City Post 22 on June 4.
