BELLE FOURCHE — Spearfish defeated Belle Fourche 5-0 in a varsity girls’ soccer game played Tuesday afternoon at the Black Hills Roundup complex, in Belle Fourche.
“Our girls did a phenomenal job,” Spearfish head coach Katrina Huft said. “We started from the back with our goalkeeper (Taya Lucas), and we worked forward throughout our defense, midfield, with our forwards, and played as a team today.”
Spearfish’s Brooke Peotter shot at the goal. Dillan Richards scored on the rebound to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game.
Laney Brill of Belle Fourche recorded a shot on goal, and teammate Sydney Bridge made a save from the goalkeeper position.
Peotter scored twice within a 97-second span to put Spearfish ahead 3-0. Bridge made three saves as the Broncs kept the halftime margin at 3-0. Makenna Ward and Jayme Peterson recorded shots on goal for Belle Fourche early in the second half.
Ashley Mailloux scored on a rebound to push the Spartans’ edge to 4-0. Shelby Swets’ goal made the score 5-0 with 10 minutes remaining.
Lightning moved into the area, and the game was ended at that stage.
Belle Fourche head coach Rob Creed said his team was flat during the first half.
“The second half, they picked it up but just can’t capitalize on our opportunities,” Creed said.
Creed said there are moments when the Broncs played well together and built an attack, but consistency is still lacking.
