SPEARFISH — The Spearfish boys’ soccer season came to an end Tuesday as the Spartans fell 2-1 to Yankton in a state AA first-round tournament game at the Black Hills Energy complex, in Spearfish.
“We just didn’t seem to connect well today at all,” Spearfish head coach Jim Hill said.
Brock Bacon’s first-half goal gave the home standing Spartans a 1-0 lead. Yankton tied the score with 10 minutes left in the half when a Spearfish player inadvertently put the ball into the Spartans’ net.
Yankton’s Luke Schulz scored the game winner with 5 minutes 20 seconds remaining.
“We had several good chances to score, and we didn’t,” Hill said. Spearfish ends the season at 11 wins, three losses, and one tie.
Hill said Yankton is a fast team on top and did well on the counter.
Yankton will host Aberdeen Central in a second-round game Oct. 12. Aberdeen Central defeated Sioux Falls O’Gorman 2-0 in a Tuesday contest.
