SPEARFISH — The Spearfish Spartans basketball team easily defeated Hill City, 95-44, Tuesday night, in Spearfish.
“What a great team environment for our players that were able to suit up for us,” said Erik Skoglund, the Spartans head coach. “We were able to get so many guys on the game and that’s how we build a program. This was a great foundation we were able to lay down, and step out, and move forward with Spartan basketball.”
Ryan Peldo hit a field goal and a 3-pointer to put the Spartans on top 5-3.
Spearfish would use its press to score the next 10 points.
A field goal by Jake Powell, two free throws by Tyler Huber,, a field goal by John Nickles, two free throws by Peldo, and a field goal by Logan Ammerman pushed the Spearfish lead to 15-3.
“Our press got us a lot of possessions, which helped us out a lot. Our team played really good. We had a lot of good ball movement, which got us open a lot of the time, and that helped secure the win,” said Spearfish junior forward Tyler Huber.
Powell made a free throw and a field goal, and a field goal by Aiden Woods gave the Spartans a 20-7 lead after the opening quarter.
Hill City got a field goal from Kobe Main and a 3-pointer by Erik Jorgenen to cut the Spearfish lead to 25-12.
The Spartans answered with field goals from Nickles, Ammerman, and Lyon, and two free throws by Peldo to extend its lead to 29-12.
A 3-pointer by Ammerman and a field goal and two free throws by Nickles increased the Spartans lead 36-17 with 3:06 left in the first half.
Spearfish went on to lead 52-24 at the half.
Nickles hit two field goals and Lyons scored as the Spartans pushed its lead to 58-24.
Lyon, Huber, Woods, Nickles, and Peyton Millis helped give the Spartans a 73-35 lead after three quarters of play.
In the fourth quarter, Huber, Seth Hamilton, Rylan Palmer, Logan Langenfield, Lyon and Trey Wood scored for Spearfish and the Spartans cruised to the win, 95-44.
We knew it was going to be a tough game, an we pulled through. I thought we played well as a team and all around we played good,” said Spartan senior guard Aiden Woods. “As a team we need to continue to have ball movement, boxing out, doing the simple stuff, and sharing the ball.”
Nickles lead Spearfish in scoring with 21 points. Huber added 15 points, Peldo added 12, Lyon 10, Ammerman eight, Aiden Woods seven, Powell five, Langenfield five, Hamilton three, Palmer three, Millis two, Trey Wood two, and Carter Lyon two.
Spearfish (5-5) travels to Sturgis Brown Friday.
