SPEARFISH — The Spearfish boys soccer team scored three second half goals to defeat rival Belle Fourche 5-1 Tuesday night, in Spearfish.
"I think we played well both halves. We just had a few mis-communications in the first half, and we solved that problem and talked about it at halftime,î said Jim Hill, the Spartans head soccer coach. "We got energized by them scoring a goal, which is good knowing we were up 2-1 after they scored and we went right down and scored, and then we scored a second time, so that was a good sign for us."
Hill thought his team was trying to do too much.
"We were just trying to overplay our positions. Your supposed to be in center defender position you need to be there, and not running up the field and trying to do something that is somebody elseís responsibility. We have people trying to do more than they should," Hill said.
Broncs Head Coach Anthony Bradley said his team started the game flat, and found themselves in a hole early.
"I thought we came out with low energy to start the game. We picked it up a little bit, but they had already gotten on the board 2-0. Then we came out and changed things up after halftime and we moved some of guys up from defense to striker," said Bradley. "We got a quick goal and then we scored on ourselves again and that really took the wind our of our sails. Then we didnít mark our man on the back post and they put a corner on us. Itís been the same mistakes that have been plaguing us all season, and its just been a rough season like that."
Bradley said the Broncs are pressing to hard to try and make a goal to convert shots into goals
"We need to take a deep breath and square ourselves up. The coaches have been preaching that all year and they just want to wail it in there instead of just tapping it in," Bradley said.
Spearfish took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game on a goal by Ben Wise. Bridger Roberdeaux scored at the 28:05 mark, and the Spartans lead 2-0 at the half
Belle Fourche got on the board on a goal by Josiah Trimble 10 minutes into the second half to cut the Spearfish lead to 2-1.
The Spartans answered with goals by Dominic DeSaro and James Odenbach to extend their lead to 4-1.
Wise got the final goal for the Spartans with 1:50 left in the game, and the Spartans went on to win by the score of 5-1.
Spearfish (9-1-1) hosts Rapid City Central (6-3-2) Saturday.
Belle Fourche (1-11-1) travels to Hot Springs (0-7-0) Tuesday, for its regular season finale.
