SPEARFISH — The Spearfish Sasquatch began its Expedition League baseball season by defeating Hub City in one game and having a second contest against the Hotshots cut short by weather.
That abbreviated game, on Sunday at Black Hills Energy Stadium, lasted for only 2 1/2 innings before heavy rains fell and flooded the infield.
Hub City loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning. Sasquatch pitcher Kyle Froom struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Luke Lampros laced a one-out double in Spearfish’s half of the second frame. Brooks DuBose singled to score Lampros and put Spearfish ahead 1-0.
Zane Hunt followed with an infield single, and Jaxon Rosencranz followed with a walk to load the bases.
Jake Gray stepped into the batter’s box with two outs. He hit a grand-slam home run to score DuBose, Rosencranz, Hunt, and himself as the Sasquatch lead grew to 5-0.
Hub City did not score in its half of the third. The rains started falling, became heavier, and kept falling for at least 30 minutes, forcing postponement of the rest of the game.
Spearfish coach Seth McLemore said a decision on this contest would be made at a future date.
The Sasquatch opened its season Saturday by defeating the Hotshots 10-2 behind a 12-hit attack.
Spearfish scored in each of the first four innings to build a 9-2 advantage. Z Westley hit a two-run single to highlight a three-run second and added a solo hole run in the fourth.
Rosencranz scored two runs and added three hits for Spearfish. Beaux Escobar added two runs and two hits. Starting pitcher Joe Lewis got the win.
Grant Farmer took the pitching loss for Hub City. Parker Borg scored a run and added a pair of hits.

“As far as offensive production goes, I couldn’t ask for any better,” he added.
