SPEARFISH — The Spearfish Sasquatch returned home and defeated Wheat City 11-3 in an Expedition League baseball game played Tuesday evening at Black Hills Energy Stadium. A brief rainstorm forced play to be halted after 7½ innings.

“They showed some flashes of the first-half team that we were,” Spearfish head coach Adam Core said. “It was really great to see guys get back to old form.”

Wheat City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dawson Forcella reached base on a fielder’s choice; Cody Kehl sprinted home.

Spearfish forged a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the first when Z Westley scored on a one-out wild pitch.

Matt Crossley laced a second-inning double to score Trace Hamby and give the Sasquatch a 2-1 edge. Tucker Roe’s sacrifice fly placed Hayden Hastings and extended the advantage to 3-1.

Dawson Martin followed with an RBI single that scored Crossley. Two batters later, Westley lined a triple to plate Martin and put Spearfish up 5-1. Westley scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 Sasquatch advantage.

Thomas Alexander’s solo home run in the fourth brought the visiting Whiskey Jackets within 6-2.

Spearfish responded with three runs in the fourth for a 9-2 cushion. Westley’s two run double (scoring Martin and Chad Call) led the way.

Crossley’s groundout in the fifth scored Hamby and extended the margin to 10-2. Each team plated a sixth-inning run to end the scoring.

Westley scored three runs and added three hits for the Sasquatch, 8-19 in the season’s second half and 26-30 overall. Dylan High earned the pitching win in his final home appearance of the season.

“He’s worked so hard, and he’s had so much success for us in so many different roles,” Core said in describing High’s efforts.

Raymond Farrell took the pitching loss for Wheat City (3-27 in the second half, 9-50 overall). Kehl and Alexander turned in one-run, one-hit efforts to pace the offense.

Spearfish endured a recent 1-6 road trip, and Call was asked about the biggest keys to tonight’s turnaround.

“I think guys just felt comfortable at home,” Core said. “Guys love playing in front of our fans.”
