SPEARFISH — Spearfish and Pierre engaged in a Wednesday Expedition League baseball doubleheader that was shorter than either team would have liked.

The Sasquatch dropped a 7-2 decision in the opening game at Black Hills Energy Stadium. Pierre held a 2-0 lead after three innings of the second game, which was cut short because of lighting difficulties after a roughly one-hour delay.

“All three fields had the lights going at once, and that’s just a little too much juice for the system,” Sasquatch head coach Adam Core said.

Pierre took a 1-0 lead in the opening game when Nick Altermatt scored on Niko Piazza’s second-inning single.

Brooks DuBose drew a one-out walk in Spearfish’s half of the third inning. He sprinted home when Jake Gray reached on a single, and the Sasquatch forged a 1-1 tie.

Pierre plated two runs in the fourth to go ahead 3-1. Luke Plunkett and Michael Herrera laced run-scoring doubles.

Piazza added a two-run single in the fourth as the Trappers moved ahead 5-1.

DuBose led off Spearfish’s half of the fifth with a single and scored on a Josue Rangel single to make the score 5-2.

Pierre added single runs in the sixth and seventh frames to put the game out of reach.

DuBose added two hits to go with his two runs for Spearfish, now 1-1. Zac Filos was tagged with the pitching loss.

Colin Smith claimed the pitching win for Pierre. Altermatt finished with three runs and three hits.

Beaux Escobar doubled to lead off the Sasquatch second inning but was stranded at third when the frame ended.

Core has encountered a lighting situation like this a time or two during his career. “I’ve seen some bizarre things, so we’ll get back at it tomorrow,” he said.

The Sasquatch website indicates that plans call for resuming this game today, with the time being on the website, with another seven-inning contest to follow.
