Sasquatch earns sweep of Pierre

SPEARFISH — Spearfish earned a two-game Expedition League baseball sweep of Pierre, Thursday, at Black Hills Energy Stadium in Spearfish.

The home standing Sasquatch posted an 8-7 victory to conclude a first game that started Wednesday but was cut short by an electrical issue. Spearfish earned a 14-3 victory in the regularly scheduled nightcap and is now 3-1 on the season.

“From top to bottom, they were ready to go,” Spearfish head coach Adam Core said of the Sasquatch players. “They were locked in all day.”

The first game resumed where it was stopped Wednesday, with Pierre leading 2-0.

Spearfish scored three runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Beaux Escobar doubled to score Josue Rangel, with Brooks DuBose singling to plate Trace Hamby and Escobar coming home on a Joe Yorke single.

Pierre sent nine batters to the plate during a five-run sixth inning that ended with the Trappers leading 7-3. Nick Altermatt hit a two-run double, and three runs scored on wild pitches.

The Sasquatch pieced together five runs in its half of the sixth. With Spearfish trailing 7-5, Luke Lampros hit a triple to score DuBose and Yorke to tie the score. Lampros sprinted home on a wild pitch for the eventual winning run.

Logan Wensley, the third of three Sasquatch pitchers, notched the win. Pierre’s Nick Spitt was tagged with the loss.

Zane Phelps scored two runs and added two hits to lead the Trappers’ offense.

Spearfish pitching: Barron Holtz 3 innings, 2 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts; Dylan High 2 1/3 innings, 3 runs, 1 hit, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts; Wensley 1 2/3 innings, 2 runs, 2 hits, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts.

Spearfish scored in seven of the nine innings to win the second game.

The Sasquatch scored five runs in the second to snap a 1-1 tie. Bales’ three-run home run highlighted the four-hit outburst.

Lampros belted a three-run home run in the third as Spearfish went ahead 9-1. The Sasquatch scored once in the fifth, once in the sixth, twice in the seventh, and once in the eighth.

Lampros finished with four runs and two hits for Spearfish. Ben Larson earned the pitching win.

Pierre’s Seth Brewer took the pitching loss. Billy Moreland scored one run and added one hit.

Spearfish will begin a five-game road trip Friday when it visits Brandon, Manitoba, for a three-game series against the expansion Wheat City Whiskey Jacks. Games are set for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Sasquatch then visits the Hub City Hotshots for games June 3 and 4 before returning home next Wednesday. Defending league champion Western Nebraska comes to Black Hills Energy Stadium on June 5 and 6.
