SPEARFISH — Zac Filos allowed only six hits in a complete-game pitching victory Tuesday as the Spearfish Sasquatch defeated the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks 11-1 in an Expedition League baseball game, played at Black Hills Energy Stadium in Spearfish.

“The command of his fastball and breaking ball was great tonight,” Sasquatch head coach Adam Core said in describing Filos’ efforts. “He kept guys off balance and was awesome tonight.”

Brennan Bales tripled to lead off Spearfish’s half of the second inning. Brent Richey reached on an error, which enabled Bales to dash home and put the Sasquatch ahead 1-0.

Spearfish’s lead grew to 2-0 in the fifth inning as Josue Rangel scored on Jake Gray’s double.

Gray slammed a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Jaxon Rosencranz and Rangel scored ahead of him as Spearfish led 5-0. The home run highlighted Gray’s two-run, five-hit, and four-RBI effort.

“He’s a great worker, and that’s no surprise to us,” Core said of Gray. “He shows up and puts the work in every single day, whether he’s playing or not.”

The Sasquatch sent 10 batters to the plate during a six-run eighth inning. They combined for five hits and took advantage of two Wheat City errors as the margin grew to 11-0.

Robbie Merced scored on Jayce Bailey’s single to put the Whiskey Jacks on the scoreboard in the ninth.

Rangel scored three runs and added four hits for Spearfish, now 10-5.

Merced scored one run and added one hit to pace Wheat City. Hunter Omild took the pitching loss.

Core said Spearfish’s players work hard each day and take a lot of pride in being able to have a strong offense. The Sasquatch collected 14 hits on the night.

“They love playing in front of this home crowd,” said Core, whose team won three of four games at Hastings. “It’s such a fun atmosphere for our guys.”

Core said the team’s overall approach has been improving each game, especially on offense.
