SPEARFISH — The Spearfish Sasquatch overcame an early deficit and defeated the Western Nebraska Pioneers 5-3 in Wednesday’s Expedition League baseball game at Black Hills Energy Stadium, in Spearfish.

“Our bullpen was awesome tonight,” said Spearfish head coach Adam Core, whose team trailed 3-0 after 3 1/2 innings. He praised Riley McSherry, Thomas Davenport, and Dylan High for their efforts.

Jacen Roberson scored on a wild pitch to put Western Nebraska ahead 1-0 in the third. He added a two-run double in the fourth to plate Colin Ludwig and Chance Medina, putting the Pioneers up 3-0.

Spearfish used a three-run fourth frame to tie the score. Joe Yorke tripled to plate Josue Rangel and Jake Gray. Yorke sprinted home on a wild pitch for the Sasquatch’s tying run.

Core said timely hitting keyed that inning for Spearfish. He added the team struggled with that during the recent road trip.

Grady Wright walked in Spearfish’s half of the seventh inning, and Zane Hunt singled two batters later. After Hunt moved to second base, Jaxon Rosencranz laced a double to score Wright and Hunt. The two-out hit gave the Sasquatch a 5-3 edge.

Western Nebraska used two walks and single to load the bases with one out in the top of the ninth. High recorded two strikeouts to end the game and secure Spearfish’s sixth win.

Gray scored one run and added two hits for the Sasquatch; Brent Richey also contributed two hits. McSherry earned the pitching win, with High getting the save.

Landon Odom took the pitching loss for the Pioneers. Roberson’s efforts featured one run and three hits.

Spearfish finished 2-2 on its recent road trip, which featured three games in Wheat City (Brandon, Manitoba) and one in Hub City (Aberdeen). Spearfish fell 11-2 in the first Wheat City game before winning two of three.

“Instead of just packing it in for the rest of the road trip, they came out the next day, and got after it, had fun, and played loose,” Core said of the atmosphere following that 11-2 contest.

Spearfish (6-3) trails Western Nebraska (7-2) by one game in the Clark Division standings. The teams are scheduled to meet again at 6:35 p.m. today, with a fireworks display following the contest.

“It feels good, but there’s a lot of baseball left to play,” Core said. “We’ve got to keep our heads on straight and keep working hard every day.”
