SPEARFISH — A three-run ninth inning lifted the Spearfish Sasquatch past Hastings 7-6 in an Expedition League baseball game played Wednesday at Black Hills Energy Stadium, in Spearfish.
“We weren’t as antsy at the plate as I thought we may have been early on in the game,” Spearfish head coach Adam Core said in describing the ninth inning. He added being able to steal third base gave the Sasquatch a chance to score the winning run.
Jaxon Rosencranz scored on the back end of a double steal as Spearfish led 1-0 in the third inning. Chad Call dashed home on a Josue Rangel single, and Rangel scored on Joe Yorke’s single to put the Sasquatch up 3-0.
The visiting Sodbusters cut the margin to 3-1 in the fourth as Carlos Pineyro scored on a Darek Bornemeier single.
Hastings used a three-run fifth inning to edge ahead 4-3. Derek Hackman’s RBI single led the way.
Z Westley hit a solo home run in the fifth inning as Spearfish forged a 4-4 tie.
A two-run sixth inning put the Sodbusters up 6-4. Pineyro laced a two-run single.
Beaux Escobar drew a one-out walk in the Spearfish ninth; Barron Holtz entered the game as a pinch runner. Rosencranz singled, and Call laced a double to score Holtz and bring Spearfish within 6-5.
Rangel lofted a sacrifice fly later in the ninth to score Rosencranz and tie matters at six. Westley and Austin Mowrey walked to load the bases with two outs.
Call sprinted home on a wild pitch to complete the rally and put Spearfish in the win column. He and Rosencranz turned in two-run, two-hit efforts for the offense; Dylan High earned the pitching win.
Austin Oblas took the pitching loss for Hastings, now 5-5 in the season’s second half. Donovan Murray scored two runs and added a hit.
“The bullpen was outstanding tonight, kept us in it,” Core said. “We had the timely hits late, which is huge.”

Spearfish improves to 4-8 in the season’s second half. The Sasquatch will host Hastings in the series’ final game today at Black Hills Energy Stadium. Start time is set for 6:35 p.m.
“We’ve just got to stay locked in to our game,” Core said. He added players must get on base by walks as well as hits.
In other Expedition League games on Wednesday, Badlands defeated Wheat City 7-4, Fremont toppled Casper 18-7, Souris Valley outscored Hub City 11-6, and Pierre downed Western Nebraska 13-4. Western Nebraska had won nine straight games going into Wednesday; Wheat City has dropped its last 20 games.
