SPEARFISH —  Daniel Sunvold of Monroe, Iowa, made his debut at Saturday’s Northern Hills CASA Half Marathon and claimed the overall title. His time was 1 hour, 12 minutes and 34 seconds for the 13.1-mile course.

“It was really good, lots of downhill,” the 21-year-old Sunvold said of the course. “I felt pretty comfortable through the whole thing.”

Sunvold is working for his uncle in Rapid City, and he wanted to compete in a road race before the college cross country season.

Sunvold will be a senior at Central College in Pella, Iowa, this fall.

“This was a pretty cool opportunity to run fast and far at the same time,” he said.

Saturday’s goal was to treat the race as a workout, Sunvold said. He wanted to set an initial 5-minute, 50-second mile pace before getting more comfortable.

“There’s pretty cool scenery throughout the entire thing,” Sunvold said in describing the Spearfish course. He added the downhill posed the biggest challenge because of the demands made on the quadricep muscles.

Andee Swann of Morristown, Tenn., was the women’s winner in the half marathon. Her time was 1 hour, 28 minutes and 19 seconds.

Madison, S.D. resident Braden Curnow emerged as the overall winner of the Heroes 5-Kilometer run-walk. His clocking was 16 minutes 14 seconds.

Meaera Shannon of Conneaut Lake, Pa., earned the women’s 5K title. Her time was 20 minutes 19 seconds.
