SPEARFISH — Lead-Deadwood earned a 37-33 victory over Spearfish in a varsity girls’ basketball game played Tuesday evening at the Spearfish High School gym, in Spearfish.

“In the end, I thought we were the team that held our composure together, especially defensively,” Golddiggers’ head coach Tim Hansen said. “It wasn’t always pretty, but we got stops, we got boards, and we did enough to win.”

Bella Reid’s layup staked Spearfish to a 4-0 lead. Stella Marcus added a layup as the Spartans’ lead grew to 7-1.

Anna Campbell scored the next six points as Lead-Deadwood forged a 7-7 tie at quarter’s end.

The Spartans opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run. Erin Rotert netted two free throws to put Spearfish ahead 15-9.

Lead-Deadwood responded by scoring the next five points. Jayna Prince connected from inside to bring the Golddiggers within 15-14.

Spearfish used two free throws by Tayler Duncan to claim a 19-15 halftime edge.

Marcus’ two free throws early in the third period extended the Spartans’ edge to 21-17. Hannah Campbell and Anna Campbell connected from the field to bring Lead-Deadwood into a 21-21 tie.

Anna Engen and Ashtyn Reiners added field goals as Spearfish eased ahead 25-21. An 8-0 run capped by Hannah Campbell’s free throw gave the Golddiggers a 29-25 edge after three stanzas.

Anna Campbell’s three points to start the fourth quarter extended Lead-Deadwood’s edge to 32-25. Marcus’ two layups kept Spearfish within 32-29.

Rotert connected from inside to end a 4-2 run and bring the Spartans to within 34-33 with 2 minutes 44 seconds left. The Golddiggers netted three free throws in the final 45 seconds for the final margin.

 Anna Campbell notched a game-high 19 points for Lead-Deadwood, now 9-6.

Spearfish (4-9) received 11 points from Marcus.

“They (Lead-Deadwood) got key rebounds at the end of the gamewhen they had to have them,” Spearfish head coach Eric Lappe said. He added the Spartans did not take care of the ball during the last four minutes.

Annelie Versper, Lyndey Dean, Reiners, and Reid were honored in Senior Day festivities before tipoff.
