BELLE FOURCHE — Spearfish, Belle Fourche, and Sturgis displayed their skills at the Black Hills Conference competitive cheer and dance event held Thursday at Edwin Petranek Armory in Belle Fourche.

Sturgis’ dance team collected a total of 447 points to emerge as the grand champion. The Scoopers finished first in jazz (153.5 points), second in pom (147 points), and second in hip hop (146.5 points).

“I think they did a good job,” Sturgis head coach Megan Meister said. “It’s a tough competition, but they brought their best.”

Meister said the Scoopers fought for every point and gave it their all. Recent improvements included increased sharpness in the pom routine and cleaner performances, she added.

Spearfish’s dance team finished second with 440.5 points. The Spartans placed first in pom (148.5 points), first in hip hop (147.5 points), and second in jazz (144.5 points).

“I’m so proud of the girls,” said Spearfish dance coach Hannah Matsen, whose team now has only four healthy members. “We have suffered a lot of injuries this season; we cut our team in half for this competition.”

Matsen said the team members stayed very positive. She added the Spartans will not enter this season’s state event, so team members will have the chance to heal.

Sturgis’ cheer squad placed second at 116 points, and Belle Fourche finished fifth at 106 points. Custer claimed top honors at 120.5 points.
