NEWELL — Doug South, the newly hired Pre-K-12 principal for the Newell School District, announced three major goals at Monday’s school board meeting that he wishes to achieve in the 2019-2020 school year.
South’s first goal for the upcoming school year is to educate the well-rounded person. He mentioned that curriculum and academics are very important to him, but he also is interested in developing a student into someone that you would want to live next door to. He seeks to develop the students into intelligent and well-rounded people.
His next goal for the year is to assist the teachers and staff of the district to be successful in their subject areas or assigned duties. South said that it is the teachers who are the certified curriculum experts and that it is his job to make sure they have whatever they need to be successful.
To ensure the success of the teachers, South said he plans to visit classrooms throughout the year to make sure they have what they need. He doesn’t want to criticize the teachers during these visits, but rather his goal is to have a presence in the classroom, so both the teachers and students feel they have the support of the principal. South will also have an open-door policy so that students and teachers feel comfortable coming to talk with him if they need anything.
The final goal South brought up is his plan to maintain an orderly school environment. To achieve a good academic environment, South plans to keep everything that the school district has done in the past that works and change what isn’t working. South also plans to have a constant presence at school events, so parents and students know him and feel comfortable coming to him with an issue.
South plans to share his goals with teachers and staff prior to the start of the school year.
South comes to Newell School District with over 30 years’ experience in the sports management field. He has also held positions as football coach, athletic director, vice principal, and minister. South began the position of pre-K-12 principal on July 1. This is South’s first position as head principal.
The Newell School District’s first day of classes is Monday.
