SPEARFISH — A new mechanic shop has opened its garage doors to the public in Spearfish; HHH Performance and Repair, LLC.

“I had a different shop by the airport, it was just kind of at my house,” said Taylor Huppler, who owns and operates the shop.

Huppler spent five years working as a diesel mechanic at Scott Peterson Motors, where he earned his accreditation as a Chrysler certified mechanic. In 2017 he struck out on his own, but soon realized he’d need to expand his growing home business.

“It got to where I had too much stuff sitting around, too many customers, so I just decided to move in here.”

The shop, located at 4415 E. Colorado Blvd., Unit 8, is near Jake’s Collision repair; a spot Huppler said he and his wife picked to be a one-stop-shop of sorts for auto repair in Spearfish.

“Say somebody want’s a dent fixed,” Huppler said. “They can go down there and get their dent fixed and when their done they can bring it down here and get a mechanical issue fixed so They don’t have to run it all over town.”

Huppler and his wife, Aleisha, moved to Spearfish from Watertown in 2013 after he graduated from Lake Area Technical Institute with a degree in diesel engine repair, and have become very active in the community sitting on a number of boards and committees including the Spearfish Optimist Club, the Booth Society, and Young Life.

“Spearfish is amazing,” Aleisha Huppler said. “You kind of see everybody working together and in a lot of communities that doesn’t happen.”

Aleisha works part time with her father’s engineering company in Rapid City as well as taking care of the day-to-day operations of the shop.

“(I do) everything the mechanic doesn’t want to do,” she said with a laugh.

Huppler said growing up on a farm in Watertown helped him discover his passion for working with machines.

“I worked on the stuff on the farm and I was good at it, so I just decided to do it,” he said.

Since his time on the farm, Huppler has turned his penchant for mechanics into a lucrative career offering many services including oil, tire, and engine services on both diesel and regular engines.

“I don’t really say no to anything,” Huppler said. “I can pretty much get anything tires-wise, accessories, all that good stuff.”
