Fire burning on Bear Butte

STURGIS – State and federal resources are enroute to help battle a fire on the north and east of Bear Butte State Park.

The fire was reported about noon Saturday at Bear Butte which is about five miles north of Sturgs.

Strong winds are contributing to the spread of the blaze through tall grasses at the base of the mountain. It has grown to 40 acres, fire officials say.

Initially, firefighting operations were being coordinated by the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and aided by departments from Fort Meade, Whitewood, Newell, Vale and Nisland.

At about 3 p.m., Cyd Janssen, on-call information officer for South Dakota Wildland Fire, said the state had taken over command.

She said there was no indication of how the fire started, but that it was under investigation.
