SPEARFISH — The owners of a company seeking to mine for gold near the rim of Spearfish Canyon have dusted off their plans to do just that.

Don Valentine, a partner in the Valentine Mining Company, LLC., told the Pioneer that after shelving those plans for several years, the company has renewed its efforts to begin necessary regulatory steps to mine.

The company holds a large-scale mining permit from the South Dakota Department of Environmental and Natural Resources; however, it also needs to gain the authority to mine from Lawrence County commissioners.

Valentine said he hopes to present information to the Lawrence County Planning and Zoning Commission on Nov. 7 followed by a public hearing Dec. 5.

Those items have not yet been placed on commission agendas.

Valentine said the company, which has held the state permits since 2012, has abandoned its original plan to extract gold from ore on the property
