BUTTE COUNTY –– The Butte County Commission Tuesday awarded a $69,399 bid for material costs to replace the Winkler Road Bridge in an effort to create an alternative route for the imminent closure of a bridge on Orman Road.
The quote, from Forterra Pipe and Precast located out of Rapid City, was for material costs only.
On Aug. 6, the commission authorized its highway department to proceed with the replacement project. The project is estimated to cost the county between $125,000 to $140,000, which includes the county highway department performing as much of the work to build the structure as possible.
Worsened by May snow and rain, the Orman Road Bridge, which spans Horse Creek west of Newell, was selected by Butte County to apply for federal bridge funds. The county found out last week that it was awarded a $2.24 million grant, in conjunction with Meade and Lawrence counties, to replace the ailing structure. Included in the funding package were funds for one Meade County bridge and two Lawrence County bridges.
The county was also awarded $51,500 from the state Bridge Improvement Grant program for the preliminary engineering on the Orman Road Bridge. The replacement project, estimated at approximately $700,000, is two or three years in the future at this point.
The commission unanimously voted to accept the quote. Commission Chairman Kim Richards was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.
