BHSU student killed by lightning strike

SPEARFISH — A Black Hills State University student died Tuesday after being hit by lightning Sunday evening.

Gage McSpadden and Evan Strand were at the Spearfish Canyon Disk Golf Course located off Winterville Drive in Spearfish when McSpadden was stuck directly and Strand was struck indirectly by a bolt during a storm, according to the Spearfish Police Department.

The two were flown to Denver, Colo., for treatment, according to Corrine Hansen, marketing and communications director at Black Hills State University.

McSpadden passed away Tuesday and the exact condition of Strand is not known. Both men were distance runners on the BHSU cross country and track and field teams.

“They are the best,” said Seth Mischke, head track and field coach for BHSU.

McSpadden was a senior from Rawlins, Wyo., majoring in special education and Strand, from Gillette, graduated in 2014

“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are extended to the families, friends and colleagues of these students,” said Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., BHSU president.
