WHITEWOOD — In April, the Whitewood Chamber of Commerce decided they wanted to honor our veterans with more than just a thank you on Veterans Day 2018. The chamber board created the “Lap Robes for Veterans” project.

Northern Hills residents were asked to donate a lap robe that would be given to veterans at Fort Meade VA, Hot Springs VA, and the South Dakota Soldiers Home in Hot Springs. The hope was 30 lap robes would be donated so each place would get ten robes.

The Whitewood Library became the drop off place. All summer white plastic bags filled with lap quilts were left at the library with no name attached. Ladies in Belle Fourche, Newell, Sturgis, Spearfish, and Deadwood joined the effort by donating handmade and purchased robes. In November, 105 lap robes were donated.
