SPEARFISH — South Dakota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) program, announced that Timothy Calahan, assistant manager at the Auto Care Center at Spearfish Walmart, was honored with a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of his service member employee.

The Patriot Award, created by ESGR, publicly recognizes individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who, like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.

Calahan was nominated for always making sure that Spc. Marissa Ford would have drill time off even if the notice was short. Ford was a six-year member of the 1742nd Transportation Company but has chosen not to continue with the second career choice as she is following two other job choices. She has worked at Walmart for four years.

Although at this time Calahan does not have any current military employees among the 15 employees who work in the Auto Care center, he hires military trained persons because they are reliable. Calahan served in the Air Force and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base during his tour of duty.

ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD.
