Open auditions for ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ Sept. 22-23

LEAD –– Open auditions were recently announced for “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” a semi-autobiographical comedy play by Neil Simon, American playwright and screenwriter, to take place Sept. 22-23.

Auditions take place at the Homestake Opera House on Main Street in Lead.

Open auditions will be held at the Homestake Opera House on Main Street in Lead from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 22 and from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 23. Auditions consist of reading from a script, which will be provided.

The show is scheduled to run Nov. 15-17 and rehearsals are typically held Sunday through Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs,” is a comedy play written for adult audiences and is the story of a writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”
