SPEARFISH — Danye Carter of Lead will spend the next six weeks at Kaatsbaan Extreme Ballet in Joffrey, N.Y., starting on Sunday.

Carter is one of 38 students who will attend the summer dance intensives, that includes students from around the world.

Directors invited the 13-year-old to a pair of three-week sessions; she accepted both.

A February audition gave Carter the chance to display her skills. She said students are invited to attend the summer sessions if they have solid technique.

Carter will be under the instruction of former ABT Principal, Martine Von Hamel, during the summer sessions.

“I was really excited, because it’s real exclusive,” Carter said about getting the chance to go to New York. “I didn’t think I’d get in.”

Carter said she would like to strengthen her technique during the next six weeks. She added that would also allow her to have more fun on stage.

But that’s not all. Carter also wants to establish connections for larger ballet schools and move toward a dancing career.

Carter will have technique sessions every morning. All aspects of ballet are addressed, but students will not have the chance for leisurely trips.

The New York sessions cap a 2013 season for Carter that ended with two titles, several overall wins, a scholarship, and invitations to several summer intensives.

Carter also competed at Starpower in Casper, Wyo., in March.  She took home the Teen Dance title with her open solo, Creator, first over teen solo on her jazz (Feelin), and received an invitation and scholarship to Starpower’s National Power Pak dance team.

In April, Carter competed against dancers from 20 studios at the Spotlight Dance Cup in Casper, Wyo.

She won first overall and the Cut Above award in the teen division with her jazz, Big Spender. She won the Entertainment Award for a lyrical solo, Little Bird, was given a scholarship to the Summer Dance Fest in Idaho for her pointe solo, Control, and was awarded the Triple crown for the three highest teen solo scores.

The season for Carter ended at Kids Artistic Revue at Billings, Mont., in May. She earned a final title: Teen Miss Dance on Big Spender.

Carter most enjoyed helping her friends excel in their dance routines this season. “I liked to see them grow in emotion, technique, and dance,” she said.
