SPEARFISH — Two men escaped serious injuries after the vehicle they were riding in was struck from behind and left mangled on Interstate 90.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier, traveling west on I-90 experienced vehicle troubles. The driver of the car and his passenger, both 18, pulled over onto the north shoulder about half a mile east of the Whitewood exit.

Tony Mangan, a spokesman for the South Dakota Highway Patrol, said Rand Woelber, 26, of Belle Fourche also was traveling west on the interstate in a 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 Longhorn pickup when he allegedly struck the Cavalier from behind.

Mangan said Woelber left the scene, took Exit 23, and was pulled over on Highway 34 by law enforcement officers with the rear bumper of the Cavalier still embedded in the front of the pickup.

Mangan said alcohol was a factor and charges are pending against Woelber.

All three men were wearing seatbelts.

The two men in the Cavalier, who were not publically identified, were transported to Spearfish Regional Hospital with minor injuries

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
