April 30th, 2008 High kicks, twirling colorful skirts and exotic instruments come together to create the folk tradition-oriented Tamburitzans, a Slavic heritage performance troupe coming to Rapid City at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 5. The 39-member group is comprised of full time college students from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania. It travels across the country and the world featuring the festive, rich traditional dances and music from Eastern Europe and gypsy cultures. Usually when I’ve been backstage during or after a concert, it’s been with Steve Allen or Henry Mancini — men whose jazzy work might actually be expected on the stage at Dakota Middle School. But sitting by the piano during the sound check for Bubba Sparxxx, I was hearing Bach, Beethoven and Bill Withers. In my last, which was also my first music column, I asked to hear from musicians playing live music in the Black Hills. Well, I heard from a few. But, not enough.
